Drum Making Ceremony – Erie, CO

The medicine drum has long been used as a healing tool. It can be used for sound healing, shamanic journey, holding space for clients, self healing and more. There has never been a better time to invest in the well being of ourselves, family and community. The drum has the ability powerfully assist in breaking old patterns and visioning our future. If the spirit of the drum has been calling you, this workshop is for you.

For many this marks the beginning of a new time in life.  There will be an altar and the drums are made in a sacred and fun way to begin a relationship of magic and healing for years to come. This is a day of connecting in community and healing as well as making a drum. The drums are soaked in water blessed with herbs and prayers. We will be working with these plants while we make the drums as well. In the past, the herbs have included local (Colorado) Sage (Artemesia), White Sage, Mullein, Uva Ursi, Juniper, and Tobacco, etc.. Working with the plants brings another dimension to the drum making process for ancestral spirit connection, healing, cleansing, and blessing. We will also have a fire to help with ancestral connection and healing.

$100 deposit, remainder to be paid in cash as a part of the ceremony.

16 or 18 inch recommended for best combination of size, sound quality and ease of handling. Don't know which kind to choose? Trust your intuition/gut feeling on which animal and size resonates most with you. Don't overthink, trust.... All hides are outstanding quality and have excellent sound qualities. If you want slightly deeper tones choose 18". If you want slightly smaller size choose 16". Both will deliver good sound. If you really cant decide, contact Michael to help with questions. 

IMPORTANT DETAILS: Pre-registration and payment of deposit of $100 is required to hold your space. The remainder (in CASH) will be paid as a part of the ceremony in honor of Ayni (sacred reciprocity). 

Your committment to attend is required. Materials are prepared in advance and tickets are non-refundable. If you are not feeling well or for some reason you need to change plans someone can attend for you or your ticket can be transferred to another person.

All materials are ethically sourced and of the highest quality. Drums will be made in a sacredly held container where your intentions will be honored, and all materials are honored as a part of the sacred circle of life. Michael has invested many hours in learning methods to make drums that are highly functional and beautiful. He is well aware of issues of cultural appropriation and is sensitive to that important subject. He has worked closely with indigenous elders and healers from from various traditions. The basis of Michael's work is about healing the wounds of trauma and conditioning at the core of the conflict and injustice in the world and being a bridge for indigenous wisdom into modern society.

Some interesting info on history of the medicine/frame drum: Anthropological research suggests the frame drum originated in Siberia thousands of years ago before migrating around the planet. Perhaps this is true. I prefer the timeless traditional stories that speak of the spirit of the drum coming from the stars, spirit world that reflects the heartbeat of the Mother Earth. Frame drums (there are many styles) have played very important roles in traditions from North and South America, Europe, Asia and all over the world. At the time of writing this, there are not references for Native American use of this style of drum. It would be nice to see that addition to the page. The drums we will be making in the workshop are a contemporary style not  connected with any particular tradition but representing the spirit of the drums. Exact wrapping styles may vary between gatherings.
